Market Update Regional Market Insights

Asia Market Update

Chinese shares closed higher. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 4.6% to 3,489.78, and the Shenzhen Composite Index lifted 8.9% to 2,098.77.

Hong Kong shares ended lower. The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 9.4% to 20,926.79.

Japanese shares closed lower. The Nikkei Stock Average slipped 1.0% to 38,937.54.

India shares ended higher. The BSE SENSEX added 0.7% to 81,634.81.

Europe Market Update

Stocks in the U.K. finished lower. The FTSE 100 Index fell 1.4% to 8,190.61.

In Europe, shares closed lower. Germany’s DAX slipped 0.2% to 19,066.47, and France’s CAC 40 lost 0.7% to 7,521.32.

Market Update North America

U.S. stocks ended higher. The DJIA increased 0.3% to 42,080.37, the S&P 500 rose 1.0% to 5,751.13, and the Nasdaq rose 1.4% to 18,182.92.

Among S&P 500 companies, the top three gainers were Palantir Technologies Inc, surging 6.60%, Edwards Lifesciences Corp jumped 6.17%, and Palo Alto Networks Inc lifted 5.06%.

The biggest decliners were Marathon Petroleum Corp which dropped 7.66%, Valero Energy Corp fell 5.31%, and Super Micro Computer Inc lost 5.05%.

Australian Market Update

Local Markets Are Expected To Open Higher

Ahead of the local open SPI futures were 9 points higher at 8,197.

The local share market has finished modestly lower, losing ground amid disappointment that China’s newly unveiled measures to revitalise its economy didn’t include major new stimulus measures.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index on Tuesday fell 28.5 points, or 0.35%, to 8,176.9, while the broader All Ordinaries fell 35.3 points, or 0.42%, to 8,443.7.

Materials/mining was the biggest mover, dropping 1.8% on the China news. Fortescue fell 5.3% to a two-week low of $19.27, BHP dropped 2.4% to $43.79, and Rio Tinto dipped 0.2% to $120.99.

In the energy sector, Woodside dropped 1.3% and Santos dipped 0.6% despite the jump in oil prices.

The Australian dollar was buying 67.25 US cents, from 67.99 US cents at Monday’s ASX close.

ON THE ASX:

  • The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index finished Tuesday down 28.5 points, or 0.35%, at 8,176.9
  • The All Ordinaries dropped 35.3 points, or 0.42%, at 8,443.7
  • The NZX 50 added 37.11 points (0.29%) to 12,593.1
